COWIE, Maxine
Maxine Cowie established Starjump – The
Centre for Visual Spatial Learners in 1993. She began her study into
this area in the early 80’s, when she was involved in Aboriginal
Education on Cape York Peninsula. It was understood then that
Aboriginal people were in fact gifted in the areas of visual spatial
cognition and yet we had failed in our attempts to find a successful
way to teach literacy to this group of children. After a decade of
involvement in Aboriginal & Islander Education, Maxine worked as a
Special Needs Teacher in a rural community in Queensland. There she
found 10-15% of non-indigenous students had similar difficulties with
learning to read, write and spell. Many of these children were
incredibly bright but simply could not learn easily in the classroom.
It was during Maxine’s time working in that context, that she began to
look for different solutions to these problems.
Three years later she established Starjump in Melbourne and has been
independently refining her understanding and practice of teaching
literacy to visual spatial learners. As a consequence, she has
developed a program, now available on CD, for students to work on in
the classroom or at home.

FISHER Dr Adrian
Adrian Fisher is an Associate Professor in
Community Psychology at Victoria University, Footscray Park Campus.
His major research focus is on psychological sense of community – to
which social identity and social support are important contributors.
Adrian is the father of two gifted children, and participated for a
short time in a now defunct social support group for parents of gifted
children. The two areas have come together into a research program
(with developmental psychology colleagues Romana Morda and Anthy
Kapsalakis) looking at social support for the parents.
Adrian has also been an active member of his children’s school council
in order to help move the provision of educational services for gifted
children. |
